With their Android rivals hitting 90Hz or even 120Hz as a matter of course, this is a bit of an oversight.Įspecially when Apple set the standard for Pro-themed 120Hz display technology with ProMotion, which made its debut in the 2017 iPad Pro. Neither screen can accelerate beyond 60Hz, just like their predecessors. But they also share the same glaring flaw – the lack of a fast refresh rate. They’re stunning screens, capable of outputting bold yet accurate colors and deep blacks. We’re looking at a pair of Super Retina XDR OLEDs, with roughly the same 460ppi(ish) pixel density, the same HDR10 credentials, and the exact same brightness specifications (800 nits typical, 1200 nits peak). Size aside, though, these displays are remarkably similar. One other slight external difference is the relative visual impact of that display notch. You need to really want a large phone before you commit to buying one, since it isn’t the sort of device that will easily slip into a jeans pocket or tiny handbag. As befits its name, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is much bigger than the iPhone 12 Pro: 14mm taller, 7mm wider, and 39g heavier.Īdd in a larger camera module (which we’ll talk about later), and the iPhone 12 Pro Max is much less wieldy than the iPhone 12 Pro. None of Apple’s new phones are cheap, but some cost a lot more than others. All four phones also support 5G, making them the first iPhones to do so.Īs for storage, there’s a choice of 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max coming in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations.Īll four phones also run iOS 14 of course, and offer Face ID. As with battery capacity though we’ll have to wait for a teardown to know for sure. They all feature MagSafe too, which uses magnets to ensure wireless charging pads are correctly aligned, and also opens the door to new accessories.Īpple hasn’t said how much RAM its new phones have, but pre-release rumors strongly suggested that the Pro models would have 6GB while the others would have 4GB. They also all support fast charging at up to 20W (though fast chargers are sold separately), and they support wireless charging. Apple never reveals the size of the batteries in its phones, so that’s something that we’ll have to wait for a teardown to learn, but it has said that the iPhone 12 mini can keep going for up to 15 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro can manage up to 17 hours, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max up to 20 hours. ![]()
